Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA) is a major auxin naturally present in plants. It mainly promotes cell elongation and division, and regulates root development, fruit ripening, and leaf abscission. As a rooting agent, it is widely used in seedlings, cutting propagation, and hydroponic plants to improve rooting rate and survival rate.

Chemical Name: 3-Indoleacetic Acid
CAS No.: 87-51-4
Molecular Formula: C₁₀H₉NO₂
Molecular Weight: 175.18
Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA) is the most important natural auxin in higher plants, regulating plant growth and development. It stimulates cell elongation, root initiation, callus induction, fruit setting, and ripening, while also delaying leaf abscission.
Because of its strong rooting effect, IAA is widely used in seedling propagation, hydroponics, tissue culture, ornamental plants, forestry, and fruit trees.
IAA is often used alone or in combination with other plant growth regulators such as Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) and Naphthaleneacetic Acid (NAA) for synergistic effects.
Application | Recommended Concentration | Benefits | Method |
---|---|---|---|
Seedling and cuttings | 50–100 mg/L | Stimulates root initiation, improves survival | Root dipping / spraying |
Hydroponics | 10–30 mg/L | Induces rooting and enhances nutrient uptake | Soaking in nutrient solution |
Fruit tree grafting | 30–50 mg/L | Promotes callus formation and graft healing | Brushing / spraying |
Tissue culture | 0.1–5 mg/L | Induces callus and organ differentiation | Added to culture medium |
Fruit setting (tomato, grape, citrus) | 10–20 mg/L | Improves fruit set and yield | Spraying during flowering |
